LB: Noussair Mazraoui

Noussair Mazraoui is another player who has underwhelmed at club level this season, only to put in some marvellous displays on the international stage.

The Manchester United defender has had to defend against some of the trickiest wingers in the world at AFCON – regardless, he has kept each and every one of them firmly at bay.

CM: Alex Iwobi

The second Fulham player on our list, Alex Iwobi certainly cannot be accused of underperforming for his club – but this hasn’t affected his AFCON tournament in the slightest.

Iwobi and Nigeria have now been eliminated, but he was perhaps the most impressive cental midfield player in the competition, notching up a pair of assists along his journey to the semis.

CM: Neil El Aynaoui

Neil El Aynaoui has been the biggest unsung hero of the tournament. He hasn’t scored any goals or registered any assists, but he has held Morocco’s midfield together – in many ways, his performance have mirrored Sofyan Amrabat’s heroics at the 2022 World Cup.

Walid Regragui has done a superlative job with the Atlas Lions – his organisation of the midfield has allowed stars such as El Aynaoui to thrive on the international stage.
