Countries with the Most Top 3 Finishes in World Cup History
The 2026 World Cup is underway. In a tournament mired in controversy off the pitch, we’d like to take a look back upon kinder times – after all, who doesn’t love a bit of World Cup history?
Today, we’ll be taking a look at some of the most successful countries in the World Cup since 1930. Which teams have finished in the top three more times than any other? Let’s take a look.
France
France are in the midst of a golden age at the moment. With players such as Ousmane Dembele, William Saliba and Kylian Mbappe at their disposal, you can expect Les Bleus to rise up through ranks such as these rapidly.
Having won the 2018 World Cup and finishing second in 2022, Didier Deschamps is working wonders for his country’s team. As things stand, France have reached the top three on six occasions.
Interestingly, France have won the World Cup twice, have finished second twice and have also finished third in the tournament twice as well.
Argentina
Argentina have had two players who can be considered the best footballers of all time – Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi. As such, seeing them on a list such as this should come as no surprise.
As three time winners of the competition, their most recent victory came as recently as last time out. Playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw with France, La Albiceleste eventually won on penalties.
Argentina have also finished second in the World Cup on three occasions – most recent of these came in 2014, when they were defeated by Germany. With no third place finishes to speak of, all in all, Argentina have reached the top three six times.
Italy
The only team on this list to have failed to reach the 2026 World Cup, Italy still remain one of the most successful countries in the history of the tournament.
As four-time winners of the tournament, only Brazil have won the World Cup more times than Italy have – we’ll get to them soon enough. As such, this makes Italy’s failure to qualify all the more shocking. In total, the Italians have achieved seven top three finishes.
Not only this, Italy have now failed for three World Cups in a row, stumbling at the starting blocks in both 2018 and 2022. On top of this, it has now been 20 years since they even escaped the group stage – Gli Azzuri may never reach the heights they were once at.
Brazil
Brazil are synonymous with the World Cup. Even if their position has eroded somewhat on the international stage over the last 20 years, they still remain the quintessential World Cup team.
Nevertheless, while Brazil have won the World Cup more times than any other country, they do not have the highest amount of top three finishes. One team is above them – before we get to number one, can you guess who they are?
With five World Cup victories, Brazil have also finished second twice and third twice, taking their overall tally of top three finishes up to nine.
Germany/West Germany
Brazil might be the most successful team in World Cup history, but they haven’t finished in the top three as many times as Germany have. For reference, we are also including their campaigns with West Germany in this tally.
Germany, combined with West Germany, have won the World Cup on four occasions. As well as this, they have also finished second four times and third four times, meaning they have finished in the top three a whopping 12 times.
While West Germany reached the top three on several occasions, East Germany never got this far. They only qualified for a single World Cup, in 1974, where they were dumped out in the second group stage (despite actually beating West Germany earlier in the competition).
