Barcelona enter race with Liverpool to sign Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is now attracting interest from across Europe. Barcelona are the latest club to join Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the race to sign the central defender. Liverpool were inches away from landing Guehi at Anfield Stadium this summer.
Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are believed to be front-runners at the moment in the bid to secure the services of Marc Guehi. The top brass at Allianz Arena are confident of Guehi’s abilities and view him as a long-term successor to Dayot Upamecano or Kim Min-jae.
According to a report published by Goal, Bayern have already held talks with the players’ representatives and are targeting a free transfer in 2026. Barcelona are alarmed by the progress made by Bayern Munich and are getting a grip of the situation themselves. Hansi Flick is determined to improve his squad and will be content with the addition of another defender, considering some below-average performances recently.
Marc Guehi’s contract situation
The England international has already entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park. The question is whether or not Crystal Palace would consider a sale in January – they may think it would be better to keep him, especially if they’re looking good in the Europa Conference League, which the first European campaign the club has ever embarked on.
Marc Guehi is currently valued at £39 million in the transfer market.
Where do Liverpool stand?
The Reds are still interested in recruiting Marc Guehi after coming extremely close to signing the defender on deadline day. The player was undergoing his Liverpool medical before Crystal Palace decided to pull away from the deal as they failed to land a replacement in time. The failed transfer has now opened the doors for other suitors like Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid to play their hands at securing the services of Guehi.
Real Madrid have mastered the art of securing free transfers in recent years. Several current Los Blancos stars like Kylian Mbappe and Antonio Rudiger have arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu on similar deals. On the other hand, Barcelona are aiming to rebuild its defensive line following the departure of Inigo Martinez. At the same time, Guehi’s availability on a reduced fee or free transfer perfectly fits the bill for the Catalans, who are financially constrained.
