Tottenham icon savages players and board – says a new manager won’t save club from relegation
Following Igor Tudor and Tottenham parting ways by mutual consent on Sunday evening, club icon Chris Waddle has launched a stinging attack on the North London giants.
It’ll go down as one of the worst managerial appointments in the club’s history as Tottenham closed the curtains on Igor Tudor’s 43-day stint as the club’s head coach. It was a gamble by the board to appoint a manager with no Premier League experience and throw him into the powder keg environment of the Tottenham Stadium. It’s fair to say the punt has failed spectacularly.
During a seven game stint, Tudor managed just one win in a dead Champions League tie and one point in five Premier League games. He went in positioned as a firefighter to pull the club out of the relegation zone and leaves with the smell of petrol on his clothes and an empty pack of matches. Yikes.
Waddle blasts board over recruitment and says transfer failings at the heart of club’s failure
It’s enough to make club legend Chris Waddle spit feathers. Speaking to 10bet, Waddle fired shots at everyone, but surprisingly gave Tudor a free pass.
“Where do Tottenham go from here? It’s looking like The Championship. I’m really concerned and worried about what is happening at the football club.
“Tottenham have been sliding for years now. The Europa League win papered over a few cracks – this group of players simply aren’t good enough to be challenging in the Premier League. The players need to take some responsibility, but the main culprit are the board and leadership of the club. They haven’t invested money in players; they’re always buying for the future, but Tottenham need better players for the now.”
Explains that a new manager won’t turn things around
Waddle didn’t deliver the thoughts that Tottenham fans probably want to hear this morning. He believes that the quality of Spurs’ squad is so poor, it doesn’t matter who comes into the club and takes the reigns for the remaining seven games of the season.
“I don’t think a new manager at Tottenham changes a thing. The players aren’t good enough and that isn’t going to change if a new manager comes in.
“I’m looking at the squad, looking at individuals that don’t look like they’ve got the stomach or the ability to pull the club out of the hole it’s in.
“I had some great years at Tottenham and have a lot of affection for the club. I have a huge amount of respect for the fans and feel for them – it’s sad to watch what has happened to the club this season.”
Nothing convinces Waddle Tottenham players have got the stomach for a relegation fight
Waddle’s final riposte was to show a slither of support for the recently ousted Tudor, but delivered a damning verdict on Tottenham’s Premier League future.
He concluded: “Don’t blame the manager for Tottenham’s problems. It isn’t Igor Tudor’s fault. The people that run the club must take responsibility.
“Tottenham are in a fight. They’ve got seven games to save their season. The only people that can save them now are the players. Players need to roll up their sleeves. Win their individual battles. Its back-to-basics stuff.
“Am I confident they will do it? Nothing I’ve seen from this group of players convinces me that Tottenham will be playing Premier League football next season.”
It’s expected that Tottenham will announce their next manager before this weekend’s trip to Sunderland. Hold onto your butts.
