Liverpool suffer two huge injury setbacks before Brentford trip
Arne Slot has revealed that marquee summer recruit Alexander Isak sustained a groin injury during Liverpool’s 1-5 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League group stage fixture.
Liverpool returned to winning ways after losing four games on the bounce. Arne Slot will be pleased with his team’s performance, but will be gutted about the two injury blows he suffered in the form of Frimpong and Isak. Isak was named in Liverpool’s starting eleven but only participated in the game until halftime. The Reds were cruising away with the tie at 1-3 when they headed for the tunnel during the break.
Several Anfield faithful were compelled to think whether Isak had been taken off the field of play for tactical reasons. The supporters were not wrong in assuming that, as Isak had another tame performance on the pitch during his 45-minute outing in Germany’s Deutsche Bank Park.
What’s the update on Isak?
The Liverpool gaffer addressed the media following his team’s emphatic victory in the Champions League. Arne Slot clarified that Alexander Isak had been replaced due to a medical condition following his complaints of experiencing pain in his groin. The injury sustained against Eintracht Frankfurt could rule out the forward from Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Brentford. Arne Slot has been quoted as saying by the Metro –
“Unfortunately Alex didn’t score before he had to go off at half-time because he felt his groin a little bit. So that’s a pity. It’s such a difficult balance to find for a player who was out for three months.
You bring him in slowly but people argue you need to play them more or for longer and now we’ve played him for the second time in three days and unfortunately he had to go off so let’s hope for the best. It’s not an easy balance to find when a player has been out for so long.”
What does this mean for Isak?
While the exact details of the injury are not yet available, it will certainly impact Isak’s Liverpool career. The Swedish International has failed to deliver to the high expectations set by him and is yet to put on his scoring boots. Isak’s only goal for the Reds (in 10 appearances) has come in the Carabao Cup against a Championship side, Southampton.
The sick bay at Liverpool is having to deal with too many issues with the latest additions being Frimpong and Isak. Brazilian shotstopper Alisson is soon going to make his return from his hamstring injury. At the same time, Ryan Gravenberch picked up an injury against Manchester United earlier this week. Arne Slot will hopefully he can have his entire squad at his disposal with important fixtures lined up against Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Manchester City.
