Will Manchester United land another goalkeeper? Who is the likeliest signing?

The problems at Old Trafford have not been limited to just in front of goal; in fact, the goalkeeper department has been one of the areas raising serious concerns for Ruben Amorim.

The tap at Manchester United seems to be overflowing with problems. Oftentimes, the Red Devils have opted for a short-term solution only to discover a bigger problem awaiting them.

The Manchester-based side invested heavily in the purchase of Andre Onana from Inter Milan back in 2023. However, the transfer has not gone as planned, with the goalie making several costly mistakes between the sticks.

If Manchester United want to return to times of long-lost glory and want to pose as serious contenders for the Premier League title, they will have to make amends in defence.

The Red Devils have been linked with several shot stoppers since the beginning of the summer window, with Onana currently ruled out due to injury. Some of the heavily linked keepers with Old Trafford are Emiliano Martinez, Marc Andre ter Stegen and Senne Lammens.

The preferred goalie signing

The Argentine World Cup winner, Emiliano Martinez, is seen as the number one replacement for Onana at Old Trafford by pundits. It is understood that Martinez is keen on exploring another chapter in his career.

However, United are finding it extremely difficult to put an apt deal in place for the ace goalie. Another thing acting as a roadblock in the deal could be Martinez nearing the end of his career, implying that he will not be a long-term solution for the Red Devils.

The former Arsenal man is thought to be interested in moving but whether Unai Emery and Aston Villa will sanction a sale to Man United seems unlikely.

Who is the other likely option?

A relatively simpler option to sign in Senne Lammens could be United’s answer to their alarming keeping problems. The 23-year-old goalkeeper currently plays for Royal Antwerp. Sources claim that a transfer fee between €15 million €20 million could see the goalie make a switch from Belgium to England.

Lammens is also seemingly confident of his abilities and even spoke about his impending departure this summer. Speaking to a local Belgian publication, Gazet van Antwerp, Lammens was quoted saying –

“Manchester United are one of the best clubs, yes. But you never know. It could also be a different club, or who knows, I might stay here. In any case, I try to keep my feet on the ground. When teams like that come along, I think you’ve earned it.”

I certainly have enough confidence in myself. I think the most important thing is that my future team, whenever they arrive, has a plan in place.”

We shall probably have to wait until the end of the window to find out if United do add a keeper.
