He was recognised as one of the best all-round midfielders that England has ever produced, and now Paul Ince has welcomed Manchester United’s likely transfer of Atalanta midfielder Éderson for a reported £36 million.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince has backed Brazilian midfielder Éderson to be a major success at Old Trafford following his €45 million (£35m) move from Atalanta.

Ince described the 26-year-old as a tenacious, box-to-box engine who possesses the ideal tactical and technical traits needed to succeed in English football.

Drawing on his own high-profile move from United to Inter Milan, Ince noted how difficult a change of country and language can be for a player, citing Florian Wirtz’s transition at Liverpool as a prime example of why new signings require time to settle.

Ince, who made 206 appearances for Manchester United under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson said of Éderson: “He’s tenacious, and he has plenty of legs. He is one of those players I mentioned before who can get up and down the park. He can defend, and technically he is very good – you have to be when you play in Serie A, especially for a team like Atalanta. He can tackle, and for me, he is a proper all-rounder.”

Although Ince has no doubt that Éderson will be an Old Trafford success story, he has reminded the United faithful that it could take the 26-year-old a season to settle into life in the Premier League.

“Listen, it is always difficult for a player making that transition. It was for me when I went from Manchester United to Inter – it takes time to settle in… It will take time for Éderson to settle into English football, so he needs to be given that patience. But once he is settled, you’ve got a very good all-round player,” Ince said.

“Look at Florian Wirtz coming from Leverkusen to Liverpool – it hasn’t been completely seamless yet, but has he fully settled into a new country? Sometimes it can be incredibly difficult moving to another country where your family might still be back in Germany or Brazil, and you’re here on your own.”

One thing that Ince was looking forward to seeing was how Michael Carrick will fit his new signing into the United midfield.

“People like Éderson, as I said, will be great for Manchester United. I’m not sure how Carrick is going to play him or exactly where he fits in alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes. But he is a very good player, and I think the United fans will really enjoy watching him,” Ince concluded.
