Most expensive Premier League transfer signings of all time
Transfer deadline day has come and gone – the 2025 summer transfer window will go down as one of the most eventful in Premier League history.
With big-money deals flying around all over the place, transfer records were being smashed on an almost daily basis.
Following this summer, who makes the list for the most expensive Premier League transfers ever?
9. Mykhailo Mudryk (Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea) – £89m
Mykhailo Mudryk’s £89m move to Chelsea is first up – and what a waste of money this turned out to be for the Blues.
Despite coming in with plenty of hype, the Ukrainian international failed to live up to expectation, proving to be a very one-dimensional winger with a questionable attitude.
Currently, Mudryk is serving a suspension after he tested positive for a banned substance. If found guilty, he faces a four-year ban from the sport.
8. Paul Pogba (Juventus to Manchester United) – £89.3m
Another mega-money transfer fee that is looked upon unfavourably these days – Paul Pogba simply did not turn up enough during his time at Manchester United.
When sufficiently motivated, Pogba was excellent. A brilliant passer of the ball and a colossal presence in midfield, he had too many poor games to call his move to United a success.
This is further exacerbated when you consider that United let him go on a free transfer just a few years earlier. Currently, Pogba plays for Monaco in Ligue 1.
7. Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan to Chelsea) – £97m
A common theme is emerging in this list. Lukaku’s move back to Chelsea in 2021 is widely regarded as one of the worst transfers of all time.
Despite all the money they paid, Lukaku could only muster eight goals in 26 Premier League games. By the end of the 2021/22 season, the Belgian international was already begging for a move away from the club.
After a series of loan spells, Chelsea finally offloaded Lukaku to Napoli in 2024 – for a reported fee of just £26.1m.
6. Jack Grealish (Aston Villa to Manchester City) – £100m
It’s debatable whether Grealish was worth the £100m price tag Aston Villa slapped on him. However, one thing is for sure – he represents the best value for money of any player so far on this list (although that isn’t saying much).
While still a Manchester City player, Grealish is currently on loan at Everton. His goal record at Manchester City wasn’t too impressive – just 12 goals in 94 games – but his overall contribution to the team saves him from the ‘flop’ category.
At City, Grealish won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Supercup and the Champions League. Additionally, he was also part of the City team that won the treble in 2023.
