Newcastle transfers: All the ins and outs from the tumultuous 2025 summer
Newcastle United left much of their transfer work for the business end of the transfer period with a flurry of arrivals and departures at St James’ Park close to deadline day. Eddie Howe and Newcastle will grow in size and stature as the season progresses, with the new signings expected to integrate with the rest of the side.
Newcastle United were involved in the longest-running transfer saga of the summer, courtesy of Liverpool’s keenness to sign Alexander Isak. The long stretching transfer negotiations affected Newcastle United’s preparations for the current season, with Isak even refusing to train with the team.
The summer transfer window marked the arrival of eight new faces at St James’ Park, all at the behest of Eddie Howe. The team was also heavily involved in selling players and as many as twelve players received their marching orders from the Magpies. At Essential Football we have reviewed the transfer business conducted by Newcastle United over the course of the summer.
Arrivals at St James’ Park
Once assured of the departure of Alexander Isak, Newcastle United channelled their resources into recruiting firepower up front. Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart for £69 million and Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55 million were deadline day arrivals for the Magpies.
The club also splashed the money for the signing of Anthony Elanga (£55m million) from Nottingham Forest and Malick Thiaw (£34.6 million) from AC Milan. Nick Pope will also still be Newcastle United’s first-choice shot-stopper despite the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on loan.

Newcastle United remained uncertain of their transfer decisions until the last days of the window. The clubs transfer decisions were massively affected and they could only afford to sign Wissa and Woltemade after being assured of the money from the departure of British transfer record, Alexander Isak.
Lloyd Kelly to Juventus and Sean Longstaff to Leeds United were the other considerable departure for the Magpies this summer. The club have also sent out four players on loan and will assess their situation as the season progresses. Isaac Hayden has been allowed to leave the squad and has been released.

With the transfer business now concluded and the entire team assembled, the onus is now on Eddie Howe & Co. to turn up and deliver the results for the St James’ Park faithful. Newcastle are yet to get running this season and have failed to register a single victory in the Premier League.
The Magpies are also participating in the UEFA Champions League this season and will be locking horns with La Liga giants FC Barcelona in their opening game. In the Premier League, Newcastle United resumes post the international break with a fixture scheduled against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home.
