Newcastle ‘Closing In’ On Major Signing from Man City
Newcastle United were seemingly poised for a difficult campaign in the 2026/27 Premier League season, but nonetheless picked up a decent point against Liverpool in their first game. Now, they’re making more forays into the transfer window.
Having lost players such as Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes this summer, as well as head coach Eddie Howe, a serious rebuild was required.
Nevertheless, they are showing signings that they’re ready to bring in some new players and become a different team under the stewardship of Matthias Jaissle.
Sources have told EssentialFootball that the Toon have been working on a move for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez ‘over the last week’.
Furthermore, according to a report from journalist Luke Edwards on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, Newcastle are now confident that a deal can be sealed.
Newcastle are not alone in their pursuit of the 24-year-old, though. According to TransferFeed, Real Madrid are also amongst the interested parties.
Given Real Madrid’s status as arguably the biggest club in the world, this could present an issue. Newcastle have already seen Victor Munoz stolen from under their noses this summer – they won’t want the same thing to happen twice.
Right now, it’s unclear if the Mags have agreed terms with either the club or the player, but there seems to be a growing indication that Gonzalez will make the jump to St. James’ Park before the window slams shut on September 1.

Can Gonzalez replace Sandro Tonali at Newcastle?
With their midfield ranks having been gutted this summer, Newcastle need reinforcements in the middle of the park. In particular, losing Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur was a damaging blow.
However, Gonzalez could prove to be a brilliant like-for-like replacement for the Italian international. In many ways, they’re very similar players.
While neither of them excel defensively, they’re both excellent passers of the ball and can create chances from deep positions, as well as being useful for reliably recycling possession.
On top of this, they are both very strong from a positional sense, always knowing where to be and helping their respective teams retain their shape. At 6ft 2, he’s also very strong in the air, being able to win aerial duels with regularity.
Is Gonzalez as good as Tonali is, though? This is a question that will soon be answered if the Spaniard makes the jump to Tyneside in the coming weeks.
Unlike Tonali, he lacks a goalscoring or creative edge, having only notched up a single goal contribution in the Premier League last season. Furthermore, he didn’t register any assists, despite playing in a team that has no end of clincal finishers.
Still, this is just one difference out of a plethora of similarities. It’s highly unlikely that Newcastle will pay anything close to what Spurs paid to sign Tonali – this could prove to be an excellent piece of business from the Magpies.
