On this day in 1947, England delivered a remarkable performance against Portugal in Lisbon, securing a 10-0 victory. 25th May 1963
In 1963, Manchester United achieved a unique feat in the FA Cup. Due to adverse weather conditions, their Third Round match was delayed until 4th March, rather than the usual early January. Despite this setback, Manchester United managed to win the FA Cup final on 25th May, just 82 days after their first match in the competition that season. They defeated Leicester City in the final, setting a record for the shortest time taken to win the FA Cup. During this period, United played a total of six FA Cup ties and 17 League matches.
25th May 1967
Celtic made history on this day in 1967 by becoming the first British club to win the European Cup. They faced Inter Milan in Lisbon, a team that had won the competition twice in the previous three seasons. Inter Milan took an early lead with a penalty from Sandro Mazzola after just seven minutes. However, Celtic responded with second-half goals from Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers, securing a 2-1 victory. This triumph earned the team the nickname “Lisbon Lions.” Remarkably, every member of Celtic’s 15-man first team squad was born within 30 miles of Celtic Park, a testament to the local talent that contributed to their European success.
25th May 2005
The 2005 Champions League final at the Atatürk Stadium in Istanbul is remembered as one of the most dramatic comebacks in football history. At half-time, AC Milan led Liverpool 3-0, and the match seemed all but over for the English side. However, Liverpool staged an extraordinary comeback in the second half, with goals from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer, and Xabi Alonso bringing the score to 3-3. With no further goals in extra time, the match went to penalties, where Liverpool triumphed 3-2. This incredible turnaround is famously known as “The Miracle of Istanbul.”
