On This Day in Football: 6th December
6th December 1930
On this day in 1930, a mere 469 spectators attended the Division 3 South match between Thames and Luton Town. The match took place at the West Ham Stadium, which had a capacity exceeding 100,000, making the sparse crowd appear even smaller. Despite the low turnout, the match proceeded, and Luton Town’s share of the gate receipts amounted to just 1 shilling and 7 pence (equivalent to 8 pence today). This modest sum was paid to Luton by postal order, which the club later framed and displayed in their boardroom as a unique memento of the occasion.
6th December 1977
Fast forward to 1977, and the date marked a significant European fixture as Liverpool faced Hamburg in the European Super Cup. The match was notable for the return of Kevin Keegan to Liverpool, just six months after his transfer to the German club. However, the occasion was far from joyous for Keegan, as Liverpool delivered a commanding performance. Terry McDermott was the star of the night, scoring a hat-trick that contributed to Liverpool’s emphatic 6-0 victory. This result secured a 7-1 aggregate win for Liverpool, underscoring their dominance in the competition.
