On this day in 1986, England faced Morocco in a World Cup group match held in Mexico. This encounter marked the first time England played against an African nation in the World Cup finals. The match ended in a goalless draw, but it was notable for an unfortunate incident involving England’s Ray Wilkins. Wilkins became the first England player to be sent off in a World Cup finals match after he threw the ball at Paraguayan referee Gabriel Gonzalez. Despite the draw, England managed to qualify from the group in second place. Morocco, on the other hand, made history by becoming the first African nation to advance to the knockout stages of the World Cup.

6th June 1996

Fast forward a decade to 1996, and the Czech Republic was gearing up for their Euro96 campaign. On 6th June, they played a warm-up friendly against Bamber Bridge, a Northern Premier League side. This match, held just before the Czech Republic’s first group match against Germany, attracted a capacity crowd of 2,400 and received international television coverage. The friendly ended in a resounding 9-1 victory for the Czech Republic. However, the Czechs faced a tougher challenge three days later when they lost 2-0 to Germany at Old Trafford in their opening group match. This fixture would be repeated on 30th June in the Euro96 final at Wembley, where Germany once again emerged victorious.
