6th November 1954

On this day in 1954, Middlesbrough experienced their heaviest defeat in League history, succumbing to a 0-9 loss against Blackburn Rovers. This Second Division match saw Middlesbrough overwhelmed by Blackburn’s dominance, marking a day of significant disappointment for the club. Remarkably, despite the crushing defeat, Middlesbrough’s manager decided to field the exact same team in their next fixture. The following Saturday, they hosted Fulham and managed to secure a 4-2 victory, demonstrating a swift turnaround in form.

In an unusual incident during a Third Division match at Griffin Park, Brentford goalkeeper Chic Brodie faced an unexpected challenge. While playing against Millwall, Brodie had a hand grenade thrown onto the pitch. Displaying remarkable composure, he picked up the grenade and tossed it into the back of the net, allowing the game to continue without interruption. It was only after the match concluded that it was discovered the grenade was a dud, averting what could have been a dangerous situation.
