A familiar storm brewing at PSG around another potential free-agent
Paris Saint-Germain is once again caught in the eye of a transfer tug-of-war. Gianluigi Donnarumma, the hero of their historic treble, is now at the centre of a contractual impasse.
After completing the mission of winning the previously impossible Champions League and backstopping PSG through a remarkable season, the Italian goalkeeper finds himself just one year away from the end of his current deal. Talks to renew have been dragging on for over twelve months without progress. Now, the club must face the reality that another high-profile exit could be on the horizon.
There is an uneasy echo of the Mbappé saga in Donnarumma’s situation. The French forward eventually left Paris as a free agent, leaving behind both a legacy and a financial void. The Italian’s comments after the Champions League final were equally ambiguous. “I don’t know if I’ll stay. We’ll see,” he told reporters.
This summer was supposed to be a celebration for PSG. They lifted the league title, conquered Europe, and asserted their dominance on the domestic front. Yet the future of one of their key figures remains unresolved. The club’s hierarchy now faces a familiar dilemma as without a new contract, they risk losing another world-class talent for nothing.
As more time passes the more complex things gets
Despite the tension, Donnarumma’s agent Enzo Raiola has maintained a diplomatic tone suggesting things are good with the club and they are waiting for things to develop.
Donnarumma, now 26, remains one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in the game. His profile has only risen since leaving Milan for the French capital. His performances during the Champions League run were nothing short of spectacular. Inter Milan, arch-rival of his boyhood club, is said to be closely monitoring the situation as they plan for life after Yan Sommer. Juventus are also watching as are Manchester City, Manchester United and perhaps most interestingly Chelsea who like City can offer Champions League football unlike United.
All three Premier League teams are linked with adding new goalkeepers as clubs know a brilliant keeper can be the difference in many games as PSG’s season showed. If Ederson leaves you would expect Man City to be favourites despite their links to former keeper James Trafford.
A return to Serie A is very much on the table, but PSG are not ready to let go without a fight. Letting Donnarumma’s contract wind down without clarity would repeat the same mistake they made with Mbappé. If no progress is made this summer, the club may be forced to put him on the market to avoid another high-profile departure on a free transfer.
History repeating itself at PSG?
PSG fans have dealt with this issue before. Kylian Mbappé refused to extend his contract and ultimately left without the club receiving a transfer fee. It was a tough one to take for the fans and the team. Luis Enrique even benched the star forward for stretches during the final weeks of the season, though he did get a sendoff at home against Toulouse.
When contract negotiations stall in Paris as with many big clubs, the fallout is rarely smooth. Donnarumma is not the first to reach a breaking point, and he likely will not be the last. With the clock ticking and more offers potentially coming in all the time, the club must consider its options. Do they trust in his loyalty and ride out the uncertainty, or do they cash in now to avoid another Mbappé affair?
A waiting game with high stakes
For now, Donnarumma is in Sardinia preparing for next season. Behind the scenes, Raiola is working on what could become one of the most significant deals of the summer.
PSG are not without a plan B. If Donnarumma does not renew, Lille’s Lucas Chevalier has emerged as the primary target to take over between the posts according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. Still, the club’s first option remains clear. They want Donnarumma to stay. Raiola, however, is expecting a contract that reflects his client’s value.

The message is loud and clear for PSG, if they want to secure Donnarumma they will need to open their cheque book and move fast. The future of their number one keeper is very much up in the air. Surely they will not want to duplicate the Mbappe fiasco particularly as a world class goalie is imperative if you want to win trophies as Manchester United and other clubs can attest.
