Scholes questions Chelsea’s decision to let Nicolas Jackson leave

Football pundit and Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes, is not convinced by Chelsea’s decision to let Nicolas Jackson leave Stamford Bridge this summer. The striker joined Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on a loan which could become a permanent deal in the summer.

The lanky striker made the move to Germany on deadline day following late drama that took place between Chelsea and Bayern Munich. The temporary transfer agreement also includes a mandatory obligation to buy clause if Nicolas Jackson crosses a certain number of appearances for the Bavarians.

Jackson enjoyed a decent spell with the Blues but failed to nail down his place in the starting eleven since joining from La Liga side Villarreal in 2023 for a £32 million fee. The Senegalese forward now plays as a backup striker to Harry Kane in the Bayern Munich setup under Vincent Kompany.

What did Paul Scholes say about Chelsea’s decision?

The ex-Manchester United star believes that Nicolas Jackson was a good fit in the Chelsea squad. Scholes is well aware that Jackson is not a natural finisher, but feels that the traits offered by the forward were of great benefit to the players around him on the field of play. Paul Scholes has been quoted as saying by Metro:

“These midfield players as No. 10s [like Chelsea’s Cole Palmer], they need pace up front, they need an Ian Wright up there.

“I don’t think Nicolas Jackson is the greatest finisher, he was never a player you were that confident was going to score if he was running through on goal. I didn’t get that impression with him.

“But at least he gets you up the pitch and he’s got the movement that helps other players because it gives them the space. When you’re not playing against pace everyone is pushed up and there’s nowhere to go.”

What is the mood in the Bayern camp?

Bayern Munich paid Chelsea £14 million to secure the loan move. If the German giants are obliged to make his signing permanent, they will make an additional payment of £56 million to the London-based club. Taking the total tally for this transfer to £70 million.

Bayern Munich’s president, Uli Hoeness, had previously suggested that Nicolas Jackson is most likely to return to Chelsea at the end of the current one-year period. The Bayern boss admitted that it’s highly unlikely that Jackson will feature in the set number of games to activate his release clause.
