With a dynamic playing style that blends defensive solidity and attacking flair, Ian Ethan Maatsen has quickly established himself as one of the promising talents in Dutch football. Born on 10 March 2002 near Rotterdam, Maatsen began his football journey at a young age, joining Feyenoord's academy at just seven. After a stint with Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven, he caught the eye of Chelsea, who signed him in 2018. He made his professional debut for the London club in September 2019, showcasing his potential in a 7–1 EFL Cup victory over Grimsby Town.

Maatsen's career took a significant turn as he embarked on a series of loan spells that would aid his development. In October 2020, he joined Charlton Athletic on loan, where he made an instant impact, debuting in a league match soon after his arrival. The highlight of his time at Charlton came when he scored his first senior goal in April 2021, helping secure a vital away win against Doncaster Rovers. His impressive performances earned him a move to Coventry City for the 2021-2022 season, where he further honed his skills, making 40 appearances and scoring three goals.

Following his successful stint in the Championship, Maatsen moved to Burnley on loan for the 2022-2023 season, contributing significantly to their promotion campaign. His emerging reputation culminated in a loan to Borussia Dortmund for the 2023-24 season, where he was named in the prestigious UEFA Team of the Season—a testament to his remarkable development and impact at the highest level of European football.

In June 2024, Maatsen made a permanent move to Premier League side Aston Villa, marking a new chapter in his career. On the international stage, he has represented the Netherlands at various youth levels and was included in the senior squad for Euro 2024, further solidifying his status as one of the Netherlands' most exciting prospects. With his versatility as a left-back and ability to contribute offensively, Maatsen looks set to become a key player for both club and country in the years to come.
