Currently showcasing his talent at Serie A club Inter Milan, Sommer is celebrated for his exceptional reflexes and high agility, attributes that have set him apart in a highly competitive sport.

Sommer's football journey began at FC Basel, where he joined the youth setup in 2003. He turned professional in 2005 and quickly asserted himself as a reliable goalkeeper, initially serving as third-choice behind Franco Costanzo and Louis Crayton. To gain valuable first-team experience, Sommer was loaned to Vaduz in 2007, where he played 33 matches and helped the team secure the Swiss Challenge League title in 2008. After another loan spell at Grasshoppers, he returned to Basel and became integral to the squad, contributing to an impressive four consecutive Swiss Super League titles from 2010 to 2013 and a Swiss Cup victory in 2012.

In 2014, Sommer made a significant leap in his career by signing with Borussia Mönchengladbach. Over the next nine years, he became a cornerstone of the team, known for his commanding presence in goal and ability to perform in high-pressure situations. His tenure at Gladbach was marked by consistent performances that earned him recognition on the international stage, eventually leading to his selection for the Switzerland national team.

Sommer made his debut for Switzerland in 2012 and has since represented his country in three FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, and 2022) and multiple UEFA European Championships (2016, 2020, and 2024). After a successful international career, he announced his retirement from national duty in August 2024. With his move to Inter Milan in 2023, Sommer continues to demonstrate his prowess, aiming to add more silverware to his already illustrious career.
