Rangers return wouldn’t interest Liverpool legend Gerrard

Steven Gerrard‘s former Liverpool teammate Glen Johnson doesn’t think the Anfield icon would be interested in returning to Ibrox if the club decides to ditch beleaguered boss Russell Martin.

Glen Johnson has poured cold water on the possibility of Steven Gerrard returning to the Rangers dugout. Gerrard, who won the Scottish title with the Glasgow giants in 2021, orchestrating a record-breaking season where the Gers were unbeaten, can’t see his old England and Liverpool teammate returning north of the border anytime soon.

During a recent interview with 10bet, Johnson said: “He did a great job before when he was there, but it’s a different group of players there, and a different club he’d be walking into.

“It doesn’t always make sense to go back to somewhere you were before, so I don’t know if he’ll be keen to get back to it. Rangers might not be the right place for him anymore.”

A massive upheaval for Gerrard

Gerrard left Rangers to manage Aston Villa, but things didn’t go according to plan at Villa Park and he was given the boot after less than a year in charge in 2022. Gerrard then made the surprising move to manage in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq, but that spell came to an end at the beginning of the year.

He was linked with Rangers vacancy in the summer, but the club opted to appoint former Southampton manager Martin. It would be fair to say that the jury is out on that appointment and Martin is walking on eggshells after a terrible start to his Rangers tenure that saw the Scottish giants record their first SPFL win last weekend.

Johnson thinks that one of the reasons that Gerrard would refuse to return tom Scotland is because his family is settled in Liverpool, saying: “I don’t think he’d be tempted to go back, because all his family are down south. It would be a huge upheaval for something that might not be as good as it was last time.”

Lamps better off at Coventry than Rangers

Another manager linked to the job is Coventry‘s Frank Lampard. Johnson, who played with Lampard at Chelsea thinks that Lampard would prefer to fight for promotion to the Premier League with the Sky Blues than take on the challenge of turning around Rangers.

He said: “As for Frank Lampard, I think he’ll prefer fighting for playoffs and promotion, even the title, than slugging it out in Scotland with a side that is struggling right now. If Lamps pulls it off with Coventry this season, they will be back in the Premier League, and that’s where everyone wants to be.”

The spotlight will be on Martin as Rangers travel to Austria this evening to face Sturm Graz in the Europa League.
