South African icon tips two Bafana Bafana players for overseas moves after World Cup heroics

South African legend Doctor Khumalo has identified two South African stars that he thinks have got the ability to shine on a bigger stage than the South African Premier League

When a legend like Doctor Khumalo talks about South African prospects, people usually listen. Khumalo is considered one of the best players that South Africa has ever produced and is a hugely respected voice on African football.

Khumalo spent the majority of his career playing for Johannesburg giants Kaizer Chiefs, winning multiple trophies over a 17-year period and being named the South African Player of the Year in 1992.

Although Khumalo was strictly a one club man in Africa, he did have a one season loan stin playing for MLS giants Columbus Crew, and he made such an impression during his year in the USA, that he was included in the MLS All Stars team in 1996.

Khumalo, who is an ambassador for Bafana Bafana’s official bookie 10bet, was following his nation’s progress at the tournament has been impressed by two players in particular.

Speaking on behalf of 10bet, who offer World Cup betting, Khumalo was asked which current South African players could shine overseas, and he said:

“I think there are a couple of young boys that, if given a chance, they can prove themselves to be elite players. You look at Jayden Adams from Mamelodi Sundowns, a young boy that comes from Cape Town. He played for Stellenbosch and then he moved to Mamelodi Sundowns. He just earned himself a star when they won the Champions League. And I must say that he’s one of the players that worked very hard to earn himself a place in the Bafana Bafana squad.”

Khumalo continued: “And then we also have Tshepang Moremi who plays for Orlando Pirates, a young boy that played for a team that is called AmaZulu here in South Africa [in] KZN and Pirates bought him from AmaZulu. And again, this is one of the youngsters that I strongly believe has the potential to be scouted to play overseas.”

Bafana Bafana make history

Despite suffering the heart ache of conceding a last-minute goal to hosts Canada and losing 1-0, this is a tournament that will be remembered positively for South Africa. It’s the first time in the nation’s history that the football team have managed to qualify for the knockout rounds of the World Cup.

South Africa had appeared at the World Cup three times previously, including in 2010 when they hosted the tournament. This group of players will be regarded as heroes for doing what previous teams couldn’t manage and reaching the KO stage.
