Premier League Club ‘Win Race’ Over Man Utd to Sign £85m Star
Several Premier League clubs have been in the running to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United over the course of the summer transfer window. However, a new development indicates that the race might be over – with Tottenham Hotspur being declared the winners.
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from transfer specialist David Ornstein, Fernandes has ‘opted’ to join the Lilywhites after they successfully outbid Manchester United. The deal is set to be for £85 million, though it could be even higher than this – the Red Devils were unwilling to match this valuation of the player and will pursue other targets as a result.
It was always on the cards that Fernandes would leave West Ham, following their relegation to the Championship at the end of last season. In addition to this, their fans must now endure the bitter blow of one of their top stars joining a local rival. In many ways, it mirrors the transfer of Mohamed Kudus to Tottenham last summer.
In doing so, Spurs have smashed their existing transfer record, which was previously set by their acquistion of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for £65 million.
Mateus Fernandes 2025/26 Premier League stats
| Games | Goals | Assists | Yellow Cards | Red Cards | |
| M. Fernandes | 36 | 3 | 4 | 6 | 0 |
Despite playing for a lacklustre West Ham outfit last season, Fernandes was able to thrive and stand out in his own right. Despite generally playing in deeper roles, he was able to make a modest goalscoring contribution nonetheless.
Not only did he managed to conjure up seven goal contributions in the Premier League, he also notched up an additional two across three games in domestic cup competitions.
Who is Mateus Fernandes?
An energetic, adaptable midfielder with no outstanding weaknesses, Fernandes is a sensational acquistion for Tottenham. While he thrives in central midfield, his extensive skillset allows him to function as an attacking midfielder or as a defensive midfielder if need be.
He carries the ball through midfield very well, being able to ward off challenges with his underrated strength and excellent ball control. In many ways, he is a complete midfielder.
On top of this, he is a very strong tackler. This, combined with his limitless stamina, make him a perfect player for Roberto De Zerbi’s setup. The former Brighton manager generally likes his teams to press high, something that the Portuguese international will be able to contribute to effectively.
