Sunderland in pole position to sign Chelsea striker
Sunderland are understood to be in prime position to secure a loan move for Chelsea starlet Marc Guiu as they continue to back manager Régis Le Bris in the transfer market.
The young Spanish attacker has been linked with a temporary move away from London, with several suitors arising in RB Leipzig, AS Roma and Real Sociedad.
According to a report published by Spanish publication, Sport.es, Sunderland have shown considerable interest and have had discussions with the negotiating party at Chelsea, expecting to close a deal.
The Marc Guiu transfer story
Chelsea are determined to prioritise Guiu’s development, which can be achieved by spending quality time on loan.
With this being said, Chelsea are adamant about not including an option to buy clause. Marc Guiu arrived in London last summer when Chelsea came knocking at the doors of Barcelona.
A £5 million bid was accepted for the La Masia graduate. The Spaniard made 16 appearances across all competitions, with a staggering 6 goals in 286 minutes played in the UEFA Conference League.
The Sunderland signings so far
The club have been massively involved in the transfer window thus far – with several signings being recruited. The biggest player addition to Sunderland’s blistering run in the transfer market was Granit Xhaka, with the Swiss international arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.
The Black Cats are also closing in on the signing of goalkeeper Robin Roefs from Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen on a £11.5million deal which is due to be completed imminently.
A decision on the transfer of Marc Guiu could be reached soon. The Spanish attacker could be a worthy addition to the plans at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland’s sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, has even reiterated that the club are committed to signing more players to put up a strong fight in the Premier League.
Speakman also emphasised the importance of making the correct decisions in the transfer window and felt that the signings made by the club thus far will be successful. The sporting director has been quoted as saying –
“We’ve still got several more players that we need to acquire in certain areas of the pitch.
I’ll leave that a little bit loose for you but we have to try to find the right players. We’ve never been knee-jerk in our decision making. We’ll try to be calm, but it’s the balance of being calm, waiting and trying to find [players]. Also knowing that you’ve got the right ones and being decisive.
Momentum is important. We want to make sure we can start well. We knew that we had three or four players that we felt were the right ones and we’ve tried to do them. I think that just shows the ambition of the ownership and the direction of the club.”
