Sunderland transfers: the ins and outs as the BlackCats make bold moves

Sunderland were active in the transfer window as they sought to bolster their squad ahead of an enormous season. The club were relentless in their transfer pursuits and made as many as 15 additions to their squad.

The Black Cats are determined to stay afloat in the top flight of English football after a considerable absence of eight years. Regis le Bris and Kristjaan Speakman left no stone unturned in the transfer market as the team made one signing after another during the intense summer period.

A standout transfer deal from the summer would be Sunderland’s loan agreement with Chelsea for striker Marc Guiu. The player joined the Stadium of Light side on a season-long loan move; however, Chelsea recalled the player on deadline day, and he has already rejoined his parent club in London.

During the summer period, Sunderland created a total recruitment bill of £154 million, which could rise by £30 million courtesy of performance-related additions. Le Bris’ side also allowed 12 players to leave the squad in a major rebuild at the Stadium of Light this transfer window. We at Essential Football have reviewed Sunderland’s activities in the transfer market ahead of a massive 2024/25 season that awaits them.

Arrivals at Sunderland

The Black Cats enjoyed a splendid transfer period in which they added the likes of Granit Xhaka, Nordi Mukiele and Reinildo to their side. Xhaka has quickly taken over the captain’s armband after joining from Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Brian Brobbey, Lutsharel Geertruida and Bertrand Traore joined Sunderland on deadline day on 1st September. Habib Diarra was the marquee signing from Strasbourg that cost the Black Cats £27.3 million in transfer fees.

Sunderland seems prepared for the season with a successful transfer window up their sleeve. In their opening three exchanges in the Premier League, Le Bris’s side have emerged victorious on two occasions.

Sunderland have earned themselves six points and are placed sixth in the points table currently, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Burnley. When the league resumes post the commencement of the international break, Sunderland makes the difficult trip to Selhurst Park to square off against Crystal Palace.
