Aberdeen History
Aberdeen FC came to be as the result of a merger between three local teams – Aberdeen (1881), Victoria United and Orion FC. They were elected to join Scotland’s top division the following year, where they have remained ever since – alongside Celtic, they are one of two Scottish clubs to never suffer relegation.
Despite this, it would take the Dons until 1955 for them to lay claim to their first Scottish league title. Previously, they had won their first Scottish Cup in 1947, defeating Hibernian in the final.
Aberdeen’s greatest period of success came under the stewardship of Alex Ferguson, who overcame the domination of Celtic and Rangers to win back-to-back league titles in 1984 and 1985.
They have since failed to live up to the lofty standards set by Ferguson, but recently won the Scottish League Cup in 2014 and the Scottish Cup in 2025.
