AS Roma History

AS Roma began life in 1927 when three older clubs in Rome – Roman FC, SS Alba-Audace and Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS – were merged together.

One of the only clubs to resist this merger was SS Lazio, who would go on to become Roma’s bitterest rivals, even to this day.

Roma’s rise would not be instantaneous – it would take them 15 years to win their first Serie A title. Since then, they have won Italy’s top prize on two other occasions – in 1983 and 2001.

In 1964, the club faced bankruptcy and was unable to fulfil its players wages. Nevertheless, the Roma fans showed their indefatigable love for the club and did everything they could to keep it alive. Thanks to their efforts, Roma escaped the threat of liquidation.

This was then followed up by a period of success in the 1980s, where they won their second Serie A league title. Today, Roma remain one of Italy’s biggest and most important football clubs. They recently won their first major European trophy in 2022, when they won the inaugural Europa Conference League.
