Atalanta History
Atalanta BC was founded in 1907 by a group of students from Liceo Classico Paolo Sarpi. The club takes its name from the huntress Atalanta in Greek mythology.
After several years of hopping between Serie A, Serie B and Serie C, Atalanta became cemented in Italy’s top flight during the 1940s. They became known coloquially as the ‘provinciale terribile’ – they became infamous for their strong performances against established teams such as the Milan clubs and Torino.
While Atalanta have never won the Serie A, they have won Serie B on no less than six occasions. Along with Genoa, no club has more Serie B on more occasions.
Despite this, Atalanta do have a major domestic trophy to their name in the form of the Coppa Italia. They won Italy’s flagship cup competition in 1963 – more recently, they also won the Europa League in 2024.
