Bayer Leverkusen History
Wilhelm Hauschild, in 1903, asked his employers to support him financially in setting up a sports club. The following year, Bayer 04 Leverkusen was born, functioning as a company team for Friedrich Bayer & Co.
They spent their early years toiling in Germany’s regional divisions – they were not among the 16 founding members of the Bundesliga in 1964.
After a few false starts, Leverkusen were finally promoted into the Bundesliga in 1979. Now an established top flight team, they began to build, winning the Europa League in 1988 and the DFB-Pokal in 1993.
However, Leverkusen’s crowning moment came very recently. In 2024, they won their first ever Bundesliga title, going the entire league season without losing a single game under the stewardship of Xabi Alonso. Additionally, they also reached the final of the Europa League that year, but were defeated by Atalanta.
