Borussia Dortmund History
Borussia Dortmund was founded in 1909 by local players who wished to break away from the existing Trinity Youth team and form their own outfit. They spent their early years playing in local leagues and battling financial issues off the pitch, before winning several league titles prior to the establishment of the Bundesliga.
Dortmund were one of the 16 founding members of the Bundesliga, finishing fourth in its inaugural season. Despite this, coupled with their success in the regional leagues, Dortmund would not win Germany’s top domestic prize until 1995.
The mid-1990s presented a golden era for Dortmund, as they won two Bundesliga titles, two DFL-Supercups and the Champions League in 1997.
While they have struggled to maintain a period of dominance over German football due to the presence of Bayern Munich, Dortmund remain one of the world’s most well-supported football clubs.
