Bournemouth History
AFC Bournemouth was founded in 1899, originally known as Boscombe Football Club. In 1923, their name was changed to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic Football Club, before finally settling on AFC Bournemouth in 1971.
Traditionally a lower league club, having competed in the third and fourth tiers of English football for much of their history, they were saved from bankruptcy in 2009 and began to rise up through the leagues.
They won promotion to the Premier League in 2015 for the first time in their history when they won the Championship title. Since then, the Cherries have spent just two years outside of England’s top flight.
Now under new ownership, Bournemouth have solidified their position as a Premier League club, despite their relatively small size.
