Brighton History

Founded in 1901, Brighton & Hove Albion first began life in the Southern League, before being invited to participate in the Third Division’s inaugural season in 1920.

The club’s famous ‘Seagull’ iconicography would not come into play until 1977, as a response to Crystal Palace’s nickname of ‘the Eagles’. Prior to this, Brighton were frequently nicknamed ‘the Dolphins’, owing to their coastal geographical location.

The club was mired in financial turmoil in the late 1990s, resulting in relegations to League Two and the sale of their then-home ground, the Goldstone Ground. Nevertheless, since Tony Bloom purchased the club in 2009, they have grown from strength to strength.

Spending much of their history in the lower leagues, Brighton’s golden era is still ongoing – their lengthy stint in the Premier League has been a remarkable journey.
