Burnley History
Initially founded in 1882 by players from local Rugby team Burnley Rovers, who wished to create a football team, as the sport was beginning to gain widespread traction in the area around this time.
The following year, Burnley won their first trophy, an amateur cup known as the ‘Dr Dean’s Cup’. They were one of the 12 founding members of the English Football League in 1888.
The Clarets spent the first 90 years of their existence bouncing between the First and Second Divisions – however, in 1980, they were relegated to the third tier for the first time.
It took Burnley until 2009 to reach the Premier League again – and even then, they were relegated in the next campaign. After another false dawn in 2014/15, Burnley finally re-cemented their status as a Premier League mainstay in 2016. Since then, they have ony spent one season out of the top division.
