Celtic History
Founded in 1887, Celtic have gone on to become the second-most decorated football club in the world – with 120 recognised trophies to their name, only Al-Alhy can boast greater success in terms of trophies won.
Despite this, the club had humble beginnings, set up after a fundraiser. The newly founded club was christened ‘Celtic’ to reflect Brother Walfrid’s (their founder) Irish roots, having been born in Sligo.
Along with bitter local rivals Rangers, Celtic are one of Scotland’s two dominant clubs. The two outfits have each won 55 league titles at the time of writing.
Since 2011, Celtic have failed to win the Scottish Premiership just once, when Steven Gerrard’s Rangers won the league. On top of this, they have also won the Scottish Cup 42 times and the Scottish League Cup 22 times, as well as a sole Champions League victory in 1967. They were the first British club to win Europe’s top prize and the only Scottish club to do so.
