Chelsea History
English businessman Gus Mears decided to found Chelsea FC in 1905 after he had purchased the then athletics stadium at Stamford Bridge. Mears had the plan of converting “the Bridge” into a football facility and had the Blues’ West London neighbours Fulham as the proposed tenants he would rent the ground to.
However after the agreement with Fulham fell through the owner came up with the idea of starting a new club. “The Pensioners” as the club were nicknamed quickly became the biggest team in the capital by the late 1910’s, as the team soon boasted attendances of around 40,000 people on a regular basis.
The club’s fortunes changed massively under the ownership of Roman Abramovich who ushered in period of sustained success with his approach to replacing managers and signing top stars as well as developing a world class academy.
Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the team when the Russian business man sold up in 2022 and despite having mixed results with multiple managers, Chelsea now appear ready to start contending for the PL title again. Following a top 4 finish plus winning both the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup in the 2024/25 season under Enzo Maresca, the club appear to be getting back to their best.
