Espanyol History
Ángel Rodríguez Ruiz, a student at the University of Barcelona, founded RCD Espanyol in 1900. Then known as Club Deportivo Español, their blue and white colours were chosen as a tribute to Roger of Lauria.
Then won the Copa del Rey in 1929 – their first ever major trophy. They followed this up with another Copa del Rey victory in 1940, before undergoing a period of relative obscurity for the next 50 years.
Espanyol rose to prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s, starting with their first Segunda Division league title in 1994. In the years to come, the White and Blue would win two more Copa del Rey trophies – in 2000 and 2006.
Most recently, Espanyol won the Segunda Division title once again in 2021. They remain Barcelona’s strongest local rivals – a constant thorn in the side of Barca.
