Fiorentina History
Fiorentina was founded in 1926 when two local clubs, CS Firenze and PG Libertas, were merged together by politican Luigi Ridolfi Vay da Verrazzano. By 1931, they would already be an established member of Serie A, though they would spend sporadic periods in Serie B over the next few years.
In 1939, Fiorentina won the Coppa Italia – their first ever major trophy. Additionally, they would go onto win the Serie A in 1956 and 1969.
In the early 2000s, however, the club underwent a period of crisis. With enormous debts and an inability to pay their players’ wages, Fiorentina officially ceased operations.
In 2002, a phoenix club was launched – now known as Associazione Calcio Fiorentina e Florentia Viola, they began steadily rising through the leagues again. Today, the Violets are once again a mainstay of Serie A football.
