Getafe History
Initally christened Sociedad Getafe Deportivo in 1923, Getafe began life as a small club playing in regioinal divisions. Over the years, they would steadily rise through the Spanish leagues.
In the 1970s, Getafe won promotion to the Segunda Division – notably, during this time, they shocked the country by drawing 3-3 in the Copa del Rey with Barcelona.
In 1982, the club was liquidated after they were unable to fulfil their players’ wages. The following year, Getafe Club de Fútbol was founded – giving the club the identity that it holds onto to this day.
As things stand, Getafe have yet to win a major trophy, despite their lengthy ongoing stint in La Liga. They have finished as runners up in the Copa del Rey on two occasions – once in 2007 and again in 2008.
