Lazio History
Lazio were founded in 1900, but did not turn professional until 1910. This makes them the oldest club in Italy’s capital.
In 1927, three smaller clubs in Rome merged to create Lazio’s greatest rivals – AS Roma. One of fiercest rivalries in all of football, the Derby della Capitale persists to this day. It is a very closely contested rivalry, with both teams picking up plenty of wins over the other. Like AC Milan and Inter Milan, the two rivals each share a stadium – the Stadio Olympico.
Le Aquile won their first major trophy in 1958, when they defeated Fiorentina to lay their hands on the Coppa Italia.
Perhaps Lazio’s greatest period of success came during the late 90s and 2000s. In this period, they won their second Serie A title (with their first coming in 1974) and four Coppa Italias.
