Leeds History

After Leeds City was forcibly disbanded in 1919, a new club was founded in its place – Leeds United. They moved into Elland Road shortly after their formation, where they have remained ever since.

The Whites were elected into the Football League in 1920, spending much of their earlier years bouncing between the First and Second Divisions. This would all change under the stewardship of Don Revie, who transformed Leeds into one of the country’s most formidable outfits.

Under Revie, Leeds won two First Division titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup. The year after Revie’s departure, they also finished as runners up in the Champions League, being controversially defeated by Bayern Munich in the final.

Leeds would never truly replicate Revie’s success – financial turmoil condemned them to League One for the first time in their history in 2006, though they would eventually win promotion back to the Premier League in 2020.
