Leicester History
Leicester City initially began life as Leicester Fosse F.C in 1884 – they would not change their name to Leicester City FC 1919, when Leicester itself gained city status.
The club’s early years were largely unremarkable, spending most of their time in the Second Division, complemented by spells in the First Division. They won a number of Second Division titles during this time, as well as the League Cup in 1964.
Leicester’s finest hour came at the most unexpected at times. Pegged for relegation, Claudio Ranieri shocked the world when he guided the Foxes to a stunning Premier League title win in 2016.
While their fortunes since have been a mixed bag, with Ranieri being sacked the following season, Leicester’s meteoric rise in 2016 remains one of the greatest stories in football history.
