Manchester United History

The “Red-Devils” as Manchester United are known are one of the most high profile football clubs in world football. The club that later would evolve into Manchester United FC was originally founded in 1878, initially named as Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway company was where the team’s players worked.

United first played in the Football League in 1892, however they suffered relegation after 2 years. The club was named as Manchester United in 1902 by a new group of local businessmen who took over team affairs. The Red-Devils became English League Champions in 1908 under the guidance of Ernest Mangnall and secured their first FA Cup the following season before moving to current home Old Trafford in 1910.

Tragedy struck the club in 1958 with the Munich plane crash. After a game against Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup, flying back to England disaster struck following a refuelling stop in Munich, Germany. Eight players and three members of members of staff were lost in the tragedy. Manager Matt Busby survived the crash and rebuilt the team going on to secure many trophies during his tenure.

United have announced plans for their new stadium to be built near Old Trafford.
