Napoli History

While SSC Napoli were officially founded in 1926, they were initially part of Naples Foot-Ball & Cricket Club, which was founded by Englishman William Poths in 1905.

Initially, Napoli were not invited to take part in Serie A, as it was restricted to teams in Northern Italy. Despite a strong start to life in the 1930s, the club would enter a period of decline as World War Two ravaged Europe.

It would not be until 1962 when Napoli won their first major trophy, when they beat SPAL in the final of the Coppa Italia.

They would enjoy their greatest period of success in the 1980s, when Diego Maradona adorned their famous blue kit. He remained with them for seven years – upon his departure from Gli Azzurri, they retired the #10 shirt in his honour. In this period, Napoli won two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup.
