Nottingham Forest History

Nottingham Forest came to be when pubgoers at the Clinton Arms set up a sports club in 1865 – it was decided that this new club would be a football team.

Forest are the 4th oldest club in England – only Notts County, Stoke City and Wrexham pre-date their formation. While most of their early years were spent in the First and Second Divisions, their success was limited, outside of an FA Cup win in 1898.

When Brian Clough took charge of the club in 1975, he would lead them to unprecedented heights. They were mired in the Second Division when Clough joined the club – five years later, they had won back-to-back European Cups.

Clough’s tenure would not have a fairytale ending, as he was sacked after the club was relegated from the Premier League in 1993. Despite a stint in League One following this, Forest are now an established Premier League club once again.
