Real Betis History

Real Betis came to be as the result of a merger between two football clubs 1914 – Sevilla Balompié and Betis Foot-ball Club. Inititally, lacking the proper funding, they struggled to compete with the other local clubs – but this would all change in the 1930s.

Betis won their first Segunda Division title in 1932, which was then followed up by their first and only La Liga title in 1935 under the guide of Irishman Patrick O’Connell.

Due to the ongoing Spanish civil war, Betis were forced to pause operations – when football returned in 1939, they were relegated back to the Segunda Division.

Since then, Los Verdiblancos have won the Segunda Division on six more occasions – they have also won the Copa del Rey three times. Most recently, they finished as runners up in the Europa Conference League in 2025, where they were beaten by Chelsea in the final.
