Real Madrid History
Los Blancos were founded in 1902 as Madrid Football Club, with the team having worn their famous white home kit since they started playing hence their nickname. The ‘Real’ part of their name is Spanish for “Royal” and was given to the club in 1920 by King Alfonso XIII along with the crown that is part of the club emblem.
Real Madrid have been based in the legendary Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid since 1947. The stadium following recent renovations has a 78,297 capacity. Quite different to most European sporting clubs, Real Madrid’s members (socios) have both owned and run the club from its inception.
Real Madrid are one of the most successful and popular football clubs in the world and are the most successful in Europe. In Spain, Los Blancos has won 71 trophies; a record 36 La Liga titles, 20 Copa del Rey, 13 Supercopa de España, 1 Copa Eva Duarte and 1 Copa de la Liga.
The club are arguably most famous for their record 15 European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles which no other team has come close to.
