Real Sociedad History
Real Sociedad was founded in 1904, becoming the first football club in San Sebastian and was initially known as San Sebastián Recreation Club. Several players split away from San Sebastián Recreation Club, forming Sociedad de Futbol in 1909. Later that year, the club won its first Copa del Rey.
In 1929, Sociedad became one of the founding members of La Liga, finishing fourth in its inaugral season. In the 1930s, their name was briefly changed to Donostia Club de Futbol, but they had reverted back to Real Sociedad by the end of the decade.
After years of relative obscurity, Sociedad enjoyed its golden era during the 1980s. In this period, they won two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
They have failed to replicate this level of success in the years since, though they did manage to win another Copa del Rey in 2020.
