Southampton History
Southampton FC was originally conceived in St. Mary’s Church in 1885 by churchgoers who were also members of the St. Mary’s Church of England Young Men’s Association.
Initially known as St. Mary’s Y.M.A, the club would undergo several name changes before finally settling on Southampton F.C in 1897. They were dominant in the Southern League, winning six league titles before they joined the English Football League in 1920.
Southampton’s crowning moment came in 1975, when they won their first and only FA Cup. To this day, it is Southampton’s sole major honour.
Their fortunes have been mixed in the following years. A ten year spell in the Premier League came to an end in 2023 – now, they are one of English football’s most prolific ‘yo-yo’ clubs.
