Swansea City History
There was a lack of football clubs in the Swansea area in the early 1900s – to counteract this, Swansea Town AFC was setup in 1912. When Swansea gained city status in 1969, the club changed its suffix accordingly.
They enjoyed success in the lower leagues during their early years, winning the Third Division South in 1925 and the national Third Division in 1949.
The club won its first and only major trophy in 2013, when they defeated League Two outfit Bradford City in the final of the League Cup by a wide scoreline of 5-0. They have also been a strong contender in the Welsh Cup over the years, winning it on ten occasions.
Despite a recent (and lengthy) run in the Premier League, Swansea currently find themselves in the Championship
