Villarreal History
Founded in 1923 as Club Deportivo Villarreal, they underwent several years in Spain’s lower leagues in their formative era. They also went through several name changes before finally settling on Villareal CF in the 1950s.
The Yellow Submarine would not play their first game in La Liga until 1998. They were relegated at the end of the season, but managed to secure a return to the Spanish top flight at the first time of asking.
They won the Intertoto Cup in 2003 and 2004, then secured their first ever major trophy in 2021 when they defeated Manchester United in the final of the Europa League.
Despite their obscurity in their earlier years, Villarreal are now a mainstay of La Liga and have only been relegated once since the turn of the millenium.
